Tech Bounces Back
Jackets Prevail Over Texas Southern 81-62 At McCamish
Damon Stoudamire was looking for a better effort on defense and more cohesion on offense after his team's disappointing loss to North Florida last week.
He got it on Tuesday night as his guys ran out to a 24 point halftime lead and then held off the visitors to get their second win of the young season.
Tech was led by sophomore Baye Ndongo with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Four teammates were also in double figures for Tech, including Nait George, Javian McCollum, Lance Terry and Kowacie Reeves.
Of note on the stat sheet was Doryan Onwuchekwa who claimed nine rebounds for Tech in his 27 minutes of play.
Texas Southern oach Johnny Jones and his team from Houston was led by guard Duane Posey with 15 points.
" Proud of the guys", said Stoudamire post-game, who added, " but I didn't expect anything else,"
Stoudamire held special regard for center Onwuchekwa who started and gathered those nine rebounds. Stoudamire cited Onwuchkwa's " defensive presence " as a big help on the night.
Tech has a few days now to prepare for Georgia who visits McCamish on Friday. Coincidentally, the Bulldogs have also played both North Florida and Texas Southern, beating both.
Tech's home game Friday will have added significance with a halftime ceremony to formally retire the jersey of Dennis Scott, their prolific scorer who entered the NBA following his junior year back in 1990 when Bobby Cremins' team made the final four.
Scott has recently completed his degree work at Tech and his halftime ceremony will add a special feature to an already big night in Atlanta.
