Tech Tops Cornhuskers
Devoe Leads A Yellow Jackets’ Win At McCamish, 73-57
Nebraska Coach Fred Hoiberg praised the effectiveness of Georgia Tech’s tough defense saying, “….they do a really good job with that.”
Georgia Tech took care of its assigned task in the 2019 edition of the ACC-Big 10 challenge Wednesday night at McCamish Pavilion. The Yellow Jackets dispatched Nebraska on the strength of a strong 2nd half, led by guard Michael Devoe. The ACC’s leading scorer contributed in multiple ways, including 8 rebounds and 7 assists. But it was his 5 point burst late in the 2nd half that seemed to settle the issue at hand. Devoe hit a 3 pointer and then promptly added a layup to stretch Tech’s lead from 6 back up to 11 at the 13th minute of the 2nd half.
Tech Guard Michael Devoe again led his team in scoring with 26
A few minutes later, an emphatic dunk by Moses Wright on an alley-oop from Devoe at the 4 minute mark allowed Tech to go up 62-51, a margin they protected and grew over the final minutes.
Moses Wright scored 18 for the Jackets, adding 9 rebounds and 3 blocks. James Banks added 8 rebounds in his 24 minutes. As a team, Tech shot 44% from the field, but only 22% from distance. However, they held Nebraska to only 32% shooting for the game. 1st year Nebraska Coach Fred Hoiberg said Tech “…plays a zone you don’t see very often.”
With the win, the Jackets improved to 4-2 on the season. Tech’s next game is home against Syracuse on Saturday 12/7 at noon. Josh Pastner made a point to remind all that the game was set for Saturday— not Sunday, as had been printed on the tickets. The Orange come to Tech with a 4-4 record. Tech will be looking for its 2nd league win of the young season.
