Mercedes-Benz Stadium update: Roof closes, soccer fans invited to enter
After years in the making, and a few delays, it’s almost time to open Atlanta’s newest stadium. A recent Mercedes-Benz Stadium Youtube video shows the aperture-style roof in action:
With things in working order, we can turn our excitement to August 26th, the first-ever game in the new place as the Falcons will host the Arizona Cardinals. Then come two Chick-fil-A Kickoff games, with Alabama and Florida State squaring off on September 2 followed by Georgia Tech and Tennesee on September 4.
After warming up the field with good ol’ American football, the stadium will see Atlanta United FC take the field against FC Dallas on September 10. This will mark the club’s first match not in Bobby Dodd Stadium, and it will be interesting to see how the venue change impacts the atmosphere, if at all.
Founding members of the club will get a sneak peek of the “Blank Tank” on August 19, with a chance to “watch the first team practice, check out your seats, and explore our new premium bar spaces, concessions, and restaurants.”
With the Falcons looking to make another deep run this year, and the expansion soccer club eyeing a playoff berth, it’s an exciting time for sports in Atlanta.
