Atlanta United acquires Bobby Boswell from D.C. United, receives TAM from San Jose
Atlanta United’s front office was busy yesterday. The Five Stripes traded a 3rd-round draft pick in the 2019 MLS SuperDraft D.C. United in exchange for Bobby Boswell. They also snagged $75,000 in Targeted Allocation Money (TAM) from San Jose in exchange for an international player spot.
To get Boswell, Atlanta had to open a senior roster spot, which they did by placing Zach Lloyd on the season-ending injury list. Boswell adds much-needed depth in Atlanta’s back line, just in time for the gauntlet of games coming up in September and October. the 34-year old defender also adds playoff experience to a young roster, bringing 11 playoff trips to the squad, including two MLS Cup runs (2011 and 2012 with Houston).
The Boswell move comes just in time for Atlanta to square off against his former team, as the Stripes hit the road to take on D.C. United on Wednesday, Aug. 23.
On the TAM side, the extra international player spot opened up when Kevin Kratz got his work visa, giving Atlanta an extra. The TAM will come in 2018, at which point the roster spot will also return to Atlanta (San Jose can use it through Dec. 31 of this year).
While these moves aren’t flashy, it’s good to see the front office bolstering the roster and finding opportunities where they can as they look to make a playoff run in their expansion season.
